IAAO Fellowship

The IAAO Fellowship recognizes dentists who have developed significant aligner orthodontic experience and demonstrated broader clinical competency through advanced education, clinical case submissions and examination.

Fellowship represents a step beyond foundational credentialing. It recognizes dentists who can apply aligner orthodontic principles across a wider range of malocclusions and patient presentations, supported by clinical experience and a portfolio of reviewed cases.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Hold an active dental license in good standing.

Complete the Clearly Alignedā„¢ Fellowship Advanced Competency, recognized by IAAO.

Complete at least 150 hours of qualifying aligner orthodontic education, including 35 hours of orthodontist-led education.

Have at least two years of active clinical experience providing aligner orthodontic treatment.

Complete at least 75 aligner orthodontic cases as the treating dentist.

Submit five fully documented clinical cases representing the prescribed categories.

Pass the IAAO Fellowship examination with a minimum score of 80%.

Clinical Case Submissions

Applicants submit five cases that demonstrate experience across different clinical challenges. The portfolio should include adult alignment and space management, sagittal correction involving a Class II or Class III case, vertical correction involving deep bite or open bite management, growing-patient treatment, and one candidate-selected case demonstrating advanced planning, biomechanics, interdisciplinary care or another meaningful clinical challenge.

Each submission must meet current IAAO documentation and scoring standards. Prescribed case categories may be refined or expanded as credentialing standards evolve.

Written Examination

The secure or proctored Fellowship examination assesses clinical decision-making and the application of aligner orthodontic principles and biomechanics.

The examination is expected to include approximately 125 questions. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass.

Maintaining Your Credential

FIAAO status follows a three-year maintenance cycle. Fellows must meet the applicable continuing education, active-standing and renewal requirements to maintain their credential.

Recognition

Successful applicants receive formal recognition from IAAO and may use the designation FIAAO, Fellow of the International Academy of Aligner Orthodontics, subject to the professional advertising and regulatory requirements of their jurisdiction.
